The pulley/generator on eBay is not the hipo pulley, it is bigger than the =
stock Tiger pulley, but the 4 1/4 hipo.

Many thanks to all of you for sharing your collective wisdom. =C2=A0The exp=
ertise available through all of you here on the List, and the willingness t=
o share it, continues to amaze.

I did find what might be a useful under drive pulley. =C2=A0
https://www.npdlink.com/store/products/mustang_pulley_generator_stamped_fin=
s-100767-431.html
But at $280 it does not make sense to spend that amount of money together w=
ith the $110 for the remanufactured generator, I would have $390 invested i=
n a solution that is inferior to an generator look-alike alternator for abo=
ut the same amount of money. =C2=A0 Plus something tells me that the pulley=
may only be 3.75 inches in diameter, whick would onlu give me about a 12 p=
ercent speed reduction. =C2=A0 That is based on what I see for $900 on ebay=
:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Mustang-AC-Cobra-OE-Restored-Fomoco-HIPO-Gener=
ator-Dynamo-/350893612053?hash=3Ditem51b2e39c15&vxp=3Dmtr
Cost aside, I had not factored in the possibility my 347 may need a pusher =
fan for cooling in very hot, slow speed weather/driving conditions. =C2=A0S=
o far in 80 degree weather last year, the griffin radiator, 6 blade fan and=
reduced diameter pulley keep things nicely in the desired 195-205 degree e=
ngine temp range. =C2=A0Have not had a chance to see how things go under mo=
re stressful conditions. =C2=A0 Thanks Mark L for mentioning a cooling aspe=
ct I had not thought of. =C2=A0Hate to have a generator setup that will not=
drive a pusher fan near idle if it turns out I need one.
So for the time being I will just stick with the new generator and stock pu=
lley. =C2=A0 We will see it it lasts through its one year replacement warra=
nty.!
I learned a lot through asking the questions, thanks again everyone for sha=
ring your knowledge.
Best regards, =C2=A0Gene

yiv9175077777 I don=E2=80=99t think the Hi-Po pulley has the same offset as=
the Tiger pulley, you will have to redo the mounts if that is the case to =
get the belt aligned.=C2=A0I=E2=80=99ve been through this dilemma on Tigers=
and other old Fords with generators. They were marginal when five grand wa=
s the upper rev limit, today most modern engine rebuilds are good for 6500 =
or more. Mechanically the generator is not really designed to spin at high =
speeds very long (Tigers run around 3K at 70), the bearings will overheat a=
nd spall, the brushes float and arc, the commutator breaks down, and then r=
eally ugly things begin to happen. Going to the Hi-Po larger pulley helps b=
ut you now have a lack of current at lower speeds from a 25% or so reductio=
n in rpm. The combination of your headlamps, tail lamps, gauges, fuel pump,=
and ignition will consume around 270 watts, that=E2=80=99s 20 amps at 13.5=
volts, and the generators I=E2=80=99ve had rebuilt might pump out 25 amps =
on a good day at max rpm, but at cruising speeds you=E2=80=99re lucky to ge=
t half that. Add a GPS, cooling fan or other accessory and you will run out=
of juice.=C2=A0So what=E2=80=99s the option? Obviously an alternator is th=
e way to go, even under-driven they put out three times the current. But th=
ey look so modern. As an alternative I have now installed three PowerGen al=
ternators that look just like the generator. They can generate over 30 amps=
at idle and are good for 7000 rpm engines. They ain=E2=80=99t cheap but th=
