     Good questions! I was puzzled because the edge is ragged so it looks 
     more like a break, metal fatigue or something. Also, I don't have an 
     air pump (mine's an early '74, March) and it generally runs rich 
     anyway. The car has approx. 112,000 miles on it.

If the missing bit is small and smooth-edged, or rather the hole where the 
bit was, then it sounds like a burnt valve. This could happen if you did 
any high speed runs under lean conditions. You don't say how many miles are 
on the engine. Does your car have an air pump? This made engines run lean 
to lower HC emissions. Just a thought.
