In regards to where to place an oil pressure gauge in a Spitfire or a GT6, I
have used two locations that do not involve cutting into the dash:
1) remove the radio and install a Smiths ammeter and oil pressure gauge in the
opening in the center dash support. What I did was cut two holes in a
rectangular shaped aluminum sheet for the gauges, then mounted the gauge/plate
assy to the radio mounting plate. I gave the aluminum plate a "brushed" finish
w/ a steel wire cup brush attached to my power drill, and I dare say it looked
pretty good. I didn't want a radio in that car anyway as I needed to listen
forany telltale clunks, rattles, etc. that may foretell impending doom.
b) Buy a small gauge at the local speed shop that comes with it own mounting
bracket and place it to the lower left side of the dash (on LHD cars), left of
the steering wheel. The bracket for the gauge mounts to the lower lip of the
metal frame of the dash that is behind the wood. This placement doesn't look
asbad as it sounds, I've never bashed a knee against it, and is simple to
remove
if you don't like it. At any rate, I don't advocate any instalation that
involves cutting up that pretty wood dash.
