I rebuilt the 'box on my '73 TR6, (non-OD) and I would certainly recommend
the rebuild kit. Since you have the gearbox open, go through the listing
of gear set changes that The Roadster Factory has and make sure that you
know exactly which gearbox you've got. Replace all the bearings, etc. and
inspect all of the gears. I'd recommend against using the Haynes manual
for this job... the Bentley manual is worth the money!!! When replacing
the bearings in the laygear (cluster gear), make sure that you get the
caged needle bearings, as they are stronger, and make sure that both
bearings are a press fit into the bores on either end of the laygear. I
overlooked this the first time when the bearing fell right into the 1st
gear end bore, and 5,000 miles later I had to open it all up to find that
the bearing had disintegrated and badly damaged the layshaft.
