Craig,
This sort of conversion has been done many times, but it's not as straight
forward as it sounds, be prepared for a lot of nagging little things - like
the firewall and floor area around the starter is slightly different between
GT6's and Spitfires, hence the different transmission covers. The mountings
for the radiator etc. Just be prepared for a little work, certianly eaiser
(but not as fun :-) as stuffing another type of engine in). Go with the
MKI, the MK III bonnet mounting (or mounting the MKI bonnet to the MK III
frame) would require quite a bit of frame modification in that area, and as
to the suspension, it depends. If it's an early MK III with the rotoflex
suspension, then yes it's a much better system. But you will have to weld
shock mounting structures similar to what the GT6 uses inside the wheel
wells. (been there done that) relocate the trailing arms inbord and change
the cable for the parking brake ( what a b***h). If it's a late model MK
III than the suspension is no different than a MK 4/1500 Spitfire and that
can be retrofitted by changing to the 'swing spring' to any year Spitfire (
good idea for any early Spitfire just be sure to include the stiffer front
anti roll bar). As far as smog goes - go with the eariler registration, or
send a response to Senator Kopp (earlier post) supporting bill SB-42, even
you out-of-state people stand to gain from this one as a lot of non Calif
states base their smog laws on Calif (for some stupid reason?) ! I sent my
letter in!!!
