I'm going from memory here,  yes a relay is needed ,  just like a horn relay
under the hood and in the same area,  power comes from the fuse box directly
next to it,  as far as the switching is concerned, you are switching the
negative, not the positive then the relay lets power thru to the coil below,
 if you look at the top of the trans, where the switches are for the gears
you will see it all begins with a ground wire running to the trans,  just go
thru the switches in series including the stem switch you just purchased and
end up at the relay, thus activating the relay and allowing the power to go
back down to the coil , on another wire of course,
