I'm sure this is an issue that has probably surfaced here on numerous
occasions - sorry if I am beating on an old issue.

Essentially I would like to know if it is necessary to use some form
of additive to protect the valve seats in my 2500TC sedan. The
commonly used "solution" here in NZ is to use Valvemaster. I'm not
sure exactly what Valvemaster contains but I do know a good proportion
of it is kerosene. Problem is this stuff blackens my spark plugs
(and does God knows what to piston crowns, combustion chambers, and
valves) and generally makes the car run like a hairy dog. There are
a number of other solutions (tin canisters in the fuelline and
suchlike) but they all sound alot like snake oil. Is it really
necessary to use anything? How long will the valve seats last if I
don't?

Many thanks,
Brian Young.
