Yep, had this problem with an HS2 from my Spit MkIV, I held the end of the
needle in a vise and yanked the piston away. Had to file the profile back onto 
the needle afterwards!!  Only joking.  I was replacing the needles anyway so it
didn't matter, and seeing as your needles have been in there for 30+ years it's
probably about time you did to  :-)
