They probably thought (1) you were shaking a "booger" off of your finger 
(2) you were motioning them to move the hell out of the way so you and the 
missus could see the sunset or (3) you were doing your best impersonation 
of (the former) Princess Di.  Regardless, just for kicks I would have asked
