I have a 77 spitfire with a weber dgav carb. I was driving and all was
fine. I made a stop and when I started it back up it didn't want to rev
up. It started wheezing (for lack of a better term) almost as soon as I
pressed on the gas. Had to tow it home with my pickup.
I started looking at the carb as it seemed like a fuel starvation
problem. I checked the fuel pump and all seemed fine there. I pulled
the main jets and idle jets to check for blocks and all looked good.
The engine will idle all day, just can't get it past 2000 rpms. I
watched the accelerator pump put a nice stream of gas in as I moved the
throttle linkage. But after that point it wants to die. If I let off
the throttle, the engine will catch itself. If I quickly move the
throttle so that the pump is continuously pumping I can achieve higher
rpms. It seems that at the transition to normal phase of the
carburetor, something is wrong. I put a vacuum gauge on the nipple of
the carburetor. This is normally hooked up to the vacuum advance on the
distributor. As I accelerate and the engine begins to rev, the gauge
reads fine, then right when it starts to wheeze the gauge drops
dramatically. The only vacuum connection is from the carb to the
distributor. There must be a vacuum leak in the carb itself, but I
can't figure out where. I would greatly appreciate any ideas.

As an aside, I need a new auto-choke body assembly. A piece is broken
off and no one I can find sells just that piece. They're all happy to
sell me a completely new carb though. Any ideas.

Thanks,
Chris LeBlanc
