I spotted a '67 solid axle TR-4A in faded signal red, with overdrive
(not working), sway bars front and back, mag wheels (?), some sort of roll
bar, minimum rust, good tires, 99k miles on the odometer and a worn out
interior for $4700. Dealer says the engine, tranny and diff were
overhauled 20K miles ago. He's already installed a rebuilt and slightly
used distributor and changed out the Weber carbs for SUs. Fan is loose and
rattles.
I'd like to take it somewhere to be impartially checked, but feel
hurried because he says he has a foreign buyer coming to look at it. I have
some confidence from past dealings that he would not intentionally stick me
with a dog and am considering paying him to find out more about the
condition of the car and maybe a bit more on the price if work is needed to
make it a reliable driver.
It seems the price is good unless there is something really nasty
happening in the drive train.
What would be the four or five most important things to look out for
before I lay out cash?
Any advice to this greenhorn buyer would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
John Cowan
