I owned a 1976 TR6 and now own a 1972 TR6. Both had distributors with only
the vacuum retard system installed. Common practice in the Netherlands is
to leave the retard mechanism disconnected, which I did in both cars.
With both cars I had the same problem you experienced. After a long quest I
found the problem: at the moment the plug spark should occur the rotor was
not properly aligned with the applicable lead connector in the distributor
cap, causing occasional misses. I fixed this by rotating the rotor slightly
on the distributor shaft , this solved the problems. The engine runs great,
no misses at any speed! So, maybe you should check the alignment of your
rotor.
