Starter problems

I seem to be having a slight problem with the starter on my 72 mkIV.

When I turn the key I hear a loud click coming form the selonoid. But the
starter never turns. 

Here is the good part.

I can tap the back of the starter with a wrench and lo and behold, it will
turn again. Now since I don't want to go around beating on the starter to
get it to crank, What should I be looking for when I tear apart the starter?
