If you have no prior experience with rebuilding a rear end, my advice, in
this case would be to by an already rebuilt unit from any of the reliable
vendors (No. 2, pick your favorite) I've heard John Kipping sells just the
front half (pumpkin, which is all you really need) for a reasonable sum.
This could actually be fitted with the rear case still bolted in with that
stubborn long bolt still in place, by just tilting the case down. In any
case you _could_just replace the offending rear axle bearing while the diff
is still in the car, but then again you wouldn't know the condition of the
rest of the unit. Chances are if one bearing is shot, especially as bad as
it sounds, it contaminated the oil with little bits of really hardened
steel pieces that pretty much ruined the rest of the bearings, and possibly
the ring and pinion.
