I got out and looked for 1980 Spit keys today while I was running
errands. This is what I discovered...
-A Cole EN15 or Taylor M81G will work
-The Cole MZ5 will *not* work -- it's a mirror image of the correct key
profile
-The "Triumph" crest key blank from Vickie Brit, et al will not work,
either :-( -- it's single-sided and has a completely incorrect profile
(I wonder what it would take for someone to make up a batch of these in
the right profile)
-You probably aren't going to find either of the correct key blanks
unless you visit an older, established locksmith -- the old guy who cut
mine didn't even have to look it up; he just went down to a dusty corner
of his pegboard and found it first thing
-The M81G blanks have "FITS MG" stamped on the back, but Malibu Barbie's
Dream Car didn't seem to mind that another BL product chose to improve
its image by using this high-performance key blank =;^)
I don't know how many of the ignition locks this key will fit, but if
you look directly down at the "pointy" end of your spare key and see
that the center profile resembles a "z", it probably will (the MZ5 has
the "z" flipped around backwards).
I hope this helps someone out there, and if anyone thinks they could
recoup their investment in tooling up to make some of these things with
the Triumph or BL logo, I'd buy a few at $10 a pop!
