There is a troubleshooting order recommended by my mechanic that is
sound in its logic and one you should consider. It goes like this:

1) Compression check. If readings are high and even, do a ...
2) Check for air leaks. If none, do a...
3) Valve adjustment. 8 (12) settings and a new rocker cover gasket
before you ...
4) Replace plugs, cap, rotor, points, condensor, set timing, check
distributor advances and then ...
5) Clean and adjust carburetor, replace diaphragm, air filter(s), set
throttle and choke linkages and adjust fast idle screws.

As you already know by now, carburetor is French for "don't f*ck with
it." (Excuse my French ...)

PS: When setting the timing, I have learned, don't assume you know
which way is "before" or "after" Mr. Top Dead Center. Double check with
a pal.
