Amoco white premium gas came out shortly after WWI.  Post war the
American Oil Company found themselves with a large stock of Benzine. 
They decided to use it to raise the Octane rating of their product  vice
an additive such as lead.  Populaity keep it in the market place. 
Benifits, presently available from all gasolinein the USA, were highly
advertised.  Benzine will also protect valve seats, it is no longer
allowed by the EPA.
