Hi Ken,

The first thing is the "A" type overdrive is a bit more rugged than the
"J". The problem is the "A" has a operating lever for the solenoid which is
a little cumbersome to adjust (the manual suggests a short 7/16in AF ring
spanner ground down to reduce it's thickness, is suitable for the job)
where as the "J" has a piston and rod, which don't need adjustment. 

Another thing is the ratios the "A" has a ratio of 0.82:1 and the "J" has a
0.797 ratio. 
So with the "J" the RPM would go down about another 60 revs (not enough to
count!!)

I would probably go for the "A" type because as mentioned earlier it is
more rugged and is better for higher speeds (if you are that type of
person).

But in the end it depends on what you want it for, and which one you can
get.
