Tom and Tony,

British wiring is sized based on the number of strands of 0.30mm diameter
copper wire. Sizes and current ratings are as follows:

9 strands - 5.75 amps
14 strands - 8.0 amps
28 strands - 17.5 amps
44 strands - 25.5 amps
65 strands - 35 amps
84 strands - 42 amps
120 strands - 60 amps

This information comes from British Wiring, 20449 Ithaca, Olympia Fields Il
60461, (708) 481-9050. A good source of British wiring supplies. ( No
connections, monetary, etc, I'm just a satisfied customer)

At 12 volts DC, and a given temperature, resistance of copper wire is for the
most part determined by cross sectional area. If you can find the CSA for the
standard American wire gauges, you could build a good cross reference between
the two sizing schemes. I have a good wire catalog, so I will do that in the
near future and publish the results. Not all copper wire is the same, so there
is some differences in the resistance of one type of wire versus another for
the same gauge, but we can get close.

Comparing the current ratings will get you pretty close.
