first time I have really tried to work on an engine and am a little clueless.
The Haynes manual gives the order and says to turn the engine, but doesn't say
how. Any ideas on how to accomplish this seemingly routine task?

Rich - I always stuck the car in FOURTH gear and gently rocked the car back and
forth to get the valves in the right sequence. Having a helper is nice, but not
necessary.
