I had a similar problem once. Inside the handle lock mechanism
is a PLASTIC piece that slides back and forth when you lock and
unlock the door. This piece is rectangular with a U shaped notch
in it. If you pry to hard on the handle with the door locked
(or maybe just partially locked) you can break or bend the piece
and then, no matter what you do, you can't disengage the door
mechanism (without removing it from the inside).
I ended up taking mine apart and making a replacement piece out
of brass - works great.
