The bottom line on Pinion preload (TR2-4):
1. Measure the Pinion preload, no axles, hubs, or anything installed beyond
the diff components, definitely without an oil seal, to 15-18 inch-lbs,
after the castellated nut is torqued to 85 ft-lbs. Add/Subtract shims to
achieve this measurement.
2. Install the oil seal and retorque 85 ft-lbs. Now, due to the seal drag,
you cannot remeasure the 15-18 in-lbs. but it should be the same as before
and you are done.
What you are trying to accomplish is put 15-18 in-lbs on the tapered
rollers. This is independent of everything else. This is critical to the
function and life of the bearing; the overall drag on the power train isn't
even a factor here.
I made my post because, from the manuals, I just wasn't certain about the
removal of all the other components, prior to my post.
