Try putting some type of insulating pad between the cross brace and the
underside of the bonnet itself.  Later models had these rubber "spacer" pads
as standard.  I have found that the bonnet surface sometimes vibrates ans
hits the cross brace under the bonnet.  Works for me, anyway!
