Jim,

Sorry I missed your post earlier.  I meant to ask you something about some of 
the data you posted.  You say you have .040"
oversize pistons, yet your new finished bore is 2.969".  Unless I'm missing 
something, standard bore is 2.9405"~2.9416" meaning
that you only have a .028" overbore.  I would go back and carefully check the 
dia. of the bore and the dia. of the barrel and
crown of the piston.  Make sure your piston-to-wall clearance is right before 
you worry about the rings.  Then make sure the
rings are within spec.  IMHO I'd prefer rings to be a little loose rather than 
tight.  That way you have a little extra
protection in case of overheating so the gap doesn't close up completely when 
the ring expands, but .005" over spec is way out
of line for a new engine.
