Gentlemen,

A couple of points just to set the record straight:

1. On a "A" type overdrive, the pump is always turning as long as the
engine's running and you're in gear, even reverse. The pump output is
directed to the operating pistons when the solenoid is engaged.

2. There are no large springs to worry about. The energy of the eight
springs is released as the overdrive unit is separated from the main
case. That's the purpose of the two long studs on the o/d unit, to allow
the springs to extend as the o/d is backed away from the adapter plate.
Worst thing that'll happen is that the springs will roll all over the
floor and under the workbench when they fall out.
