Tom,

You should pack it up and sell it to some american for big US $$$'s.  Just
kidding.
Seriously, once you get it out of the car select fourth gear and turn the
input shaft 
by hand and watch the output flang.  The output should turn exactly once
for each 
turn of the input shaft.  If you get 1 and then some then I would say your
OD is stuck 
in the OD position.  Its happened to us an a couple of ocasions.  Once on a
TR6
(A-type) and a couple of times on an Austin Healey (also A-type).  A locked
OD
can cause the described symptom.

Yep, same here although the lay gear can stay put.  There ain't no short
cuts 
with transmissions.
