One place to look at is the ignition switch itself.  I had problems with my
TR6 cutting out while running and it turned out to be the electrical
contacts at the rear of the ignition switch.  It could well be that moving
the stick had nothing to do with it.  There is no interlock switch that
could effect the starting.  The only year the seat belt interlock was a
factor was 1974,  by the 1976 model the interlock was removed.

BTW, why are you looking at replacing the rear shocks?  If it is a problem
with too much squat, you can get metal spacers for the rear springs to give
a little extra lift.  Depending on the type of shocks you use, they can
limit the size of tires you can use.
