Thanks for the fast reply.  Unfortunately, I already cleaned, boxed and
shipped the old cover.  I did compare the two during the first installation,
however, and they appeared identical.  But this is certainly something to
investigate further.  The real frustrating thing is that when I shift into
first, it's not as if I'm having any trouble getting it into gear. It's just
that when I get there, the gear is "locked" in place and doesn't budge as I
begin to lift off the clutch.

I'm loathe to fool around with those square bolts on the cover linkage out
of fear of messing things up further (remember, all other gears work
perfectly), but perhaps I'll try adjusting the rail that controls first.
