Lee,

I used a hook to get them out. I have a workshop manual that explains the 
proceedure, but unfortunately it's in German, so probably of no use for you.
Very Important for all works on the metering unit is a very clean area. Be 
carefull when you remove the O-rings that no dirt, dust or little metal parts 
fall inside the unit, otherwise you need to disamble the whole thing and clean 
it.
