The TR4A does not have the breather tube like the TR4, and the hole in the
block is sealed with a plug. Crankcase ventilation is provided at the valve
cover, and circulated back into the intake manifold via the "pancake", a
spring and rubber gasket arrangement. I believe most parts for that are
available from Moss. If not, Pat, I think I have
one.
You should do a compression test. If you don't have the one, most of the
chain auto stores sell them. Buy a good one that screws into the spark plug
hole. There are instructions in the tester. Test to see if one cylinder is
low. Perhaps one cylinder has a broken compression ring. They should be
even, hopefully within 10% of each other and about 140 lbs.
However, if it's just a slow leak at the fuel pump, try removing the pump,
reface the pump's mating area with a flat file. Use a new gasket and some
RTV sealer, and see if it goes away. If there is blow by, you'll have traces
of combustion in the oil. A good machine shop can sell you a kit to send out
for testing.
If the compression is good, and there is no blow by in the oil, the new
gasket is properly installed, then the "pancake" PVC is suspect.
