shock or the link? If dropping the axle, the spring end of the link is not
a tapered pin, just rusted most likely.

Because often times the link has failed but the shock is still fine. The
spring end of the link is not tapered but if the rubber has deteriated you
can't get any torque on the nut because the stud rotates in the rubber.
