Bob, 

1) Are you sure that the hub adaptors are on the proper side of the car?  The 
knockoffs should (might - if they are after market) have "left side" and 
"right side" on them.  If your knockoffs do not have that then you can tell 
they are on the correct side if the left side ones tighten clockwise and the 
right side ones tighten counterclockwise. Of course in order for the 
knockoffs to do that the hub adaptors have to be on the correct side to start 
with.

2) Go to www.vtr.org and open the articles on wire wheels in the Maintenance 
section. That will give you a better understanding of how to tighten them.
