I agree to a point.  The 1300 havng a much closer to square bore/stroke 
comparison would be able to wind much higher without having the tendency to
fly apart.  But it's drawback is that it has the same bearings as the 1500 
which being larger, create more drag.  The prefered Spitfire engine
according to many respected Spitfire resources is the small journal 1300 (Mk3) 
engine.

I have also heard from a highly respected source that the block metal in the 
MkIV and 1500 engines is inferior to the earlier ones.
