I am about to start a '54 Doretti (a cousin of the TR) after 25 years of
storage, and am planning on bringing up oil pressure prior to starting the
engine. On the early TR3 engine, the engine is free, I have changed the
filter element (which is almost horizontal, so can not be pre-filled) and am
going to try to pump some oil into the engine prior to starting. I also
pre-oiled the rockers and put about a teaspoon of oil down each cylinder to
lube the rings.
Question: Haven't looked REAL close at the books, but looks like I could put
a fitting on the side of the original housing and externally lube the
system. Any suggestions on where? The oil pressure piping is rather small,
but I may pressurize it that way. One way to inject the oil is to make a
small container out of pipe with a valve on the bottom and an air fitting on
top. Fill with oil, pressurize, screw hose or pipe into engine, open valve.
Related, I had a '71 BMW2002 which had the same problem discribed after a
couple of years of storage - no oil pressure on a known good mechanical
gauge screwed into the block. 1) I over filled the engine a little with
oil, 2) jacked up the rear of the car so oil flowed more towards the pump
(in the front of the engine in this case) and hit the starter with no plugs
in the car. This put the oil pump almost into the oil and the oil pressure
came right up.
FYI, on an old tractor I have, it is standard practice on rebuilt engines to
prime the pump using a plug supplied in the engine casting to the oil
galley. Remove plug, pour in oil, replace plug, start engine. Oil pressure
comes right up.
