Mike :

I've played a little with toluene and ethyl alcohol. It takes large
quantities of either one to be effective, so they just aren't cost effective
at the prices I have to pay.

Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl (MMT) looks very promising. I
currently use a commercial octane booster with MMT (my TR3A knocks badly on
premium alone), and it seems to be very effective. Although it costs
considerably more per bottle than the more common solvent type additives, it
takes far less of it to suppress knock in my engine. I find that I can
treat 10 tanks or so (depending on how steady my hand is <g>) with a single
can of Outlaw Racing Formula, while 4 cans/tank of STP Octane booster is not
enough !

Someday, I'll look into either synthesizing MMT on my own, or buying it
direct from the manufacturer (Ethyl corporation). I also want to
investigate using water injection as a knock suppressant, which apparently
works very well under some circumstances. But, I had a bit of a catastrophe
with one of my homemade injectors a few years back, and I haven't gotten
back around to making a failsafe design.

The MMT works well enough that other projects are more pressing <g>

See

for lots of info (and references) about octane, what it is and how to get
it.
