Your facts are basically as I recall them, except that the Cobras Carrol
Shelby has been selling (I think they're nearly all gone, if not
completely so) are technically not kit cars.  In order to get past the
safety requirements, they had to be sold as complete cars.  ISTR there
was also some dispute over the name 'Cobra', Ford claims to have
trademarked it in the 70's.  So, what he's selling today is not an "AC
Cobra" but some similar name.  Ironically, there was also a lot of
friction between Shelby and the various other kit car makers, he felt
they should pay him a licensing fee for copying his creation and using
his name, and also felt that many of the replicas were not worth the
name.  I read somewhere that revenge was at least part of his motivation
for building and selling those old original parts.
