>>>Hello All,

This past weekend, I got around to checking the gear oil in my
differential. It was quite low.

I drove it for a quick run, parked it and placed some newspaper under
the differential. Sure enough, it is leaking from the front of the
unit.

I've never worked on a differential before, but I'm guessing the leak is
coming from the pinion oil seal.

Is this an easy repair...anything else it might be...any hints on doing
the work?

Bill, I am in digest mode and noticed you already received a reply from Pete
Chadwell. His reply is right on, so I'll just add my two cents. First,
before you offer up the pinion to the shaft, be sure to clean up the outer
surface that makes contact with the seal with some emery cloth so that it is
nice and smooth or it will probably leak again (ask me how I know). By the
way, I recently installed a rubber version of the leather seal that seems to
be holding up very well, but I will warn you that the outer diameter of the
seal goes in a little too tight and distorts if you try and press it in
flush with the housing. But it seems ok anyway. Second, I believe the
driving flange seals will not come off unless you remove the flanges
themselves. That means you still have to have the flange pressed off after
you remove the nut from the stub axle. A local machine shop charged about
$40 for both to press them out (even with a 25 ton press, it still took a
little heat on one of them to come off). Unless you have a serious leak, I
probably wouldn't bother changing them.
