I had the same problem with a 65 spitfire. It ended up being pieces of the
inside of the fuel tank broke loose and as I drove they would settle to the
bottom and restrict the opening. When I started back up the fuel sloshed
around and I was able to go again until it settled. I ended up pulling the
gas tank out, cleaning it out and didn't have any more problems with it.
