Who said they reverse at all? It's only convex mirrors that reverse, and
they do reverse up and down as well as left and right.

I was wondering how long it would take someone to think of the Corvair
example.

However, whether it turns backwards or not depends on your point of
view.
If you consider the flywheel being installed on the 'front' of the
engine,
instead of the engine being installed 'backwards', then it turns the
same
direction as most (not all) other engines.  That is, counter-clockwise
if
you stand behind the car looking forward.

On a slightly related subject, why do mirrors reverse left and right,
but
not up and down, even if you hold them sideways ?
