Sorry, Mr. Runyan - but I have to disagree. For their day, Jaguar and
Standard-Triumph carpets were thick. Perhaps by current standards they are
'thin'? I recently compared the original carpets in my Triumph to a new set
offered by John Skinner. In terms of colour, pile density, felt backing,
weight and edge binding, Skinner's product offering was identical to the still
unworn set in my car which in its life to date, has regularly carried four
people upwards of 240,000 miles. In that period, the effects of ultra-violet
to fade is all I can confirm.
While I am confident your own supplier probably makes an excellent product, it
has to be said that Skinner's offering is entirely consistent with a new
carpet as fitted at the factory. Personally, I don't subscribe to the
obsession for original componentry and appearance as do many on this list -
but Skinnner's carpets, if representative of the examples I saw, entirely
reflect the original factory look and quality that I remember so well. This is
clearly crucial for many purists. The fact he is based in an region that has
seen the production of raw wool to finished wool products for at least the
last thousand years is surely indicative that the people involved know what
they are doing?
