I posted this a few days ago, only to find out that the number etched in
the cone is NOT the bearing number. Apparently the cone ("outer race" to
this former Mechanical Engineer) can be replaced independently of the
bearing bits. I wouldn't think of replacing one without the other, but I
digress. Scott Tilton shared his research on bearings with me (tnx Scott),
so I decided bag my effort to find them locally. As I'm going to drive my
car.... ah ..... vigorously (see the .sig), I only want to rebuild the diff
once, so quality bearings are essential. So I checked with the big three
to see who made their bearings. Only Moss returned my query. They said
their rear axle bearings are made by Timken and / or SKF (depending upon
which bearing you're looking at), both of which manufacture high quality
bearings.
So what's my point? Let me (with Scott's help) save anyone considering a
TR4 rear axle / differential rebuild a lot of effort: buy the bearings from
Moss and don't worry about trying to find them locally. Probably not worth
the trouble (OK, I'm lazy).
