One trick that works well is the "rope trick."  This is where you feed some
small, cotton rope down the spark p;ug hole and then use the starter to
push the head away from the block.   It is assumed that at this point the
rocker assembly is removed (it has to be to remove all the head nuts) so as
the valves will not be bent.  I've found that it works best if you find TDC
on cylinders #1 and #6 and then back the crankshaft off 30 degrees.
