If by opened up too much mean, too large of a lash, the engine will run 
smoother but a bit noisy!   Large valve lash settings make the valves have less 
duration and lift, this gives a smoother idle.

If the lash calls for .005 to .007 and you set it at .010, that still isn't a 
big jump.  .030 would be a big jump.
