Thread-topic: bad habit - stuck in first
Shame I couldn't get to the All-British field meet in Portland Ore last
weekend. Sat morn at the ATM, got some cash, went to back out, there was
a clash when I went into reverse. Engage the clutch killed the engine,
the car didn't move. Then I take it out of reverse into neutral position
and lifted my foot off the clutch and - Holy cow, we jumped ahead
towards the ATM! in neutral ??
Then it became obvious it was stuck in first, couldn't get to any gear
but reverse, and then, the trans was locked up. It dawned on me that it
was in BOTH first and reverse.
So managed to get home in first (ouch) and then on with the Volvo.

When I got to it, it was easy to get it out of first and the shifter
back on, everything seems OK.

I think the bad habit is that years ago I got so I always shift into
first or second (to use the synchro to 'stop' the input cluster from
spinning) and then into reverse. I must have gone into first and then in
haste lifted the lever up and out of the first/second selector shaft.
Despite my resolve never to do that again, I still do it every time. I
am slowing down though, so going into reverse is cautious and
deliberate.

Anyone else ever had this problem??
Is this a typical wear problem on the shifter??
