Am about to receive replacement layshaft and new needle bearings for
laygears.
1. I've been working on removing the old needle bearings; they are the type
with the outer shell. Getting the needles out was easy enough but the outer
shell is really resisting. Any tricks of the trade here? I have tried a
dremel with cutoff wheel working from the inside but so far have only been
able to remove small chunks; the metal seems very hard and is not inclined
to bend (I was hoping to crush it inwards).
2. It seems like Haynes is telling me I can install the layshaft with its
gears before the mainshaft. If so, is there really room then to wiggle the
mainshaft into place? I hope so: For disassembly it told me to remove the
layshaft first, so that its gears would drop down out of the way, which I
did. But to install it last after the mainshaft, yikes, looks like it could
be pretty difficult. So any BTDT advice?
TIA,
Jim
