What do you mean by "loading up with gas" ?

If you've got fuel running down the throat, the float level is too high.
Primary cause is crud in the needle valve, but could also be things like a
float that is too heavy (fuel inside), or adjusted too high, or fuel
pressure too high.  I've even seen valves that leaked between the valve and
the bowl cover.

External leaks are a different story.

Might help too if you told us which SU carb you have.  There were quite a
few different designs over the years and it's not uncommon to fit a later
design to the earlier cars.
