The only time I've done this, I used a large wooden clamp from Harbor Freight
that I happened to have on hand, the kind with two forcing screws that work
together so you can control the angle of the jaws.

With some determination, I was able to disassemble it and reassemble with the
jaws reversed.  Probably not the best tool for the job, but it performed
acceptably, IMO.

You could probably make something that would work better out of some large pipe
and forcing screws, but it didn't seem necessary.
