But it's not just the bracket at the front, it's also the front plate of the
engine.  It's pretty stout, I ran this setup for years.  I eventually did as
you did, though, and used a bolt long enough to go through the rear tab of
the bracket.  Otherwise, my alternator had a tendency to tilt out of line
with the other pulleys, shortening the life of the belt.

One other thing to double-check, Bill.  The rear mounting tab on the
alternator must NOT be clamped towards the front tab, or the housing will
eventually break.  It sounds like you've got a bushing for the rear tab to
slide on, which is as it should be, so I just thought I would mention the
requirement.
