I want to thank the List for all the advice on my J-Type overdrive that
refused to disengage after a rebuild. It seems that this is a common problem,
where the internal clutch sticks to the fixed brake ring in the housing (other
possible causes are a non-functioning solenoid, or a stuck pressure relief
valve). The fix in my case was a lead-filled rubber mallet applied judiciously
to the external brake ring. It took five circuits of
drive/engage/stop/hammer-to disengage before it started to work normally.

Cheers,
