Horrible Freight sells a pair of stethoscopes (as do a lot of other  
people) that will prove useful in pinpointing the source of the  
noise.  It is possible that you have a bad lifter or a bad bearing.   
You can remove the valve cover to narrow things still further without  
throwing oil TOO far....  If you have no stethoscope, you can make  
one with a long skinny bolt stuck into a rubber tube, stuck into your  
ear.

You can put pressure on the drive train by having one person  
feathering the clutch while the other listens (with their toes tucked  
in).
